Proemium of "The Iliad" (c. 750 - 700 B.C.E)
Proemio de "La Ilíada" (c. 750 - 700 a.C.)
(ENG)
The proem of the Iliad is the introduction that presents the central theme of the poem: the wrath of Achilles. It begins with an invocation to the Muse to inspire the story, a typical device in epic poetry. This song was performed by an aoidos (bard), who recited it with musical accompaniment and could use the same melody throughout the work, as it was composed in dactylic hexameter. In addition to being dedicated to the gods, the proem exalted the heroes and conveyed values such as honor and fate. Its purpose was to capture the audience's attention and preview the main events of the narrative.
